The Miracle of Insulin

Living with insulin is costly and worrisome, but it is essential for some people, and it is important to consider where we would be without it.

Let’s take the time to acknowledge how truly lucky we are to have insulin to treat our diabetes. Even though diabetes has been described in ancient Egyptian medical texts as early as 552 BC, there was no cure. Diabetes was a death sentence. During the early part of the 20th century, researchers were making progress in understanding and treating diabetes, but the treatments were extremely harsh. The prominent American physicians who where the experts at the time prescribed severe fasting and undernutrition to allow diabetics to live as long as possible. Some patients did, in fact, starve to death or suffered horrible complications from malnutrition, especially the children. From 1915 to 1922 “starvation diets” were the only known treatment for diabetes, and this treatment only prolonged the inevitable somewhat. Diabetes was still a death sentence.

Considering the dire prognosis of diabetes and the severity of the treatments available at the time, the discovery of insulin in 1922 was truly miraculous. The real history of the discovery of insulin is complicated and controversial, but the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Frederick Grant Banting and John James Rickard Macleod in 1923 for the discovery of insulin. Finally, there was a way for diabetics to live long and healthy lives.

The Economics of Insulin

The original patents for producing insulin were awarded to three men: the Novel Prize winner Dr. Frederick Banting, research assistant Charles Best, and Dr. James Collip. Amazingly enough, the three of them all sold their patents to the University of Toronto for…$1.00 each. Dr. Banting was even quoted as saying “insulin belongs to the world, not to me.”

Of course, wide-scale manufacture and distribution of insulin presented its own challenges, but early efforts in this regard focused on keeping the life-saving medication as cheap as possible. In fact, the price of insulin per unit quickly went down from 5 cents to 2 cents.

Unfortunately, economics has changed, suddenly, and drastically. The price of insulin has tripled since 2009, and many people simply cannot afford it anymore. In fact, a survey by T1International showed that more than one out of every four people in the United States are rationing their insulin. That is the highest percentage of insulin rationing of any high-income country surveyed.

Of course, this rationing of insulin is dangerous and heartbreaking. For people who can’t afford insurance, insulin can cost $1,300 per month, forcing people to choose between food or rent and insulin. And for many who do have insurance, the economic reality isn’t much better. People are dying because they cannot afford insulin.

Living with Insulin

In addition to the enormous economic burden, insulin has become, there is the day to day fear, pain, and inconvenience of being dependent on insulin. Living with insulin requires rigorous planning and calculation. Get it wrong, and your blood sugar levels can drop to lethal levels. Using an insulin pump can make things easier, but insulin pumps are expensive, complicated, and uncomfortable. Either way, long term use of insulin has negative effects on the human body.

Freedom from Insulin

Make no mistake, if you have diabetes and your doctor has prescribed insulin, do not stop taking it without your doctor’s approval. But wouldn’t it be amazing to be free from insulin? Modern medicine is great, and insulin is an amazing discovery, but all too often doctors ignore other options. Maybe in their experience, people generally want a quick fix. Or maybe they are unduly influenced by incentives from pharmaceutical companies. Either way, there are other courses of treatment that definitely deserve attention, and unfortunately, your doctor probably can’t or won’t provide this information.

Be Informed

There are many ways to treat diabetes that can even result in total independence from insulin. Yes, everyone knows that diet is key, but exactly what foods do you need to eat? How do you prepare these foods? When do you need to eat them? How can you follow the right diet without making your nutrition a full-time job? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a simple, foolproof guide to all of this?

Exercise is also important for overall health, but what kinds of exercise are best for diabetics?

And what about techniques that are either too old or too new for your doctor to have learned? Ancient cultures such as Japan have health secrets that are only recently being confirmed by western medicine. And recent studies in toxins have opened exciting avenues in the treatment of diabetes.

All of this information and more is now available. You can find everything you need to know about managing your diabetes at Diabetes Freedom Review.
